Though the huntress’ muzzle was shot through with more white than brown now, a white that echoed the unchanging, blinding white of the great cat that padded beside her, the jade coloured eyes of the huntress were clear and sharp. But while her eyesight was still undiminished, her muscles and bones were tired and weary and she walked with a slight limp from a constant ache in her hip. She moved slowly up the side of the mountain, through the familiar trees and brush, along a trail that had become mostly overgrown and, unless you knew what to look for, indistinguishable from the rest of the surrounding woods. Finally, pushing her way through a large patch of silverleaf, she entered a small clearing.
Singinghorn smiled as she looked around the clearing.
“Journey’s end my dearest friend.”, she murmured to the great cat as she lovingly ran her fingers through his glossy fur.
Memories washed through her, as Singinghorn moved slowly about the clearing, the clearing where she had been born and raised by her mother and shared with her brother. She had left this clearing so many years ago, had travelled far and seen great wonders, rank evil and astonishing beauty.
A great weariness overcame her and she settled down and made a small fire, and settled herself against a rock.
She thought back upon her travels and of her friends with that notorious band known as the Drunken Monkey Brewery and a happy smile came to her as she thought of each of them. Of Rukra, who always charged in first with her brother, Matok ever watchful and protecting. Of the mirthful and deadly Xynth and her roguish cohort Trogbob. Of the irreverent Hukari who always seemed more rogue than shaman. Of the calm and steady Golomojo who had kept them alive more times than there are stars in the sky. And most especially of Pazo, the big hearted leader, who possessed a much overlooked wisdom. There were others as well, but memory is a fickle thing and often absent when needed the most.
“Good and exciting times weren’t they, Ghost.”, she whispered as she gently stroked Ghost’s head which lay contentedly in her lap. Ghost’s low deep responding purr was answer enough.
The huntress lay against the rock for hours lost in happy memories, her breath coming slower and slower until finally, in the moments just before dawn, her breath came no more. The great cat, Ghost, raised his head and nuzzled Singinghorn’s face, a mournful rumble rising from his throat. Rising up, Ghost lifted his great head and let forth a great bellowing roar that echoed and echoed through the surrounding mountains. Giving Singinghorn a last tender nuzzle, Ghost turns and slowly pads away but then stops, ears perking and alert, he looks up beside him and the fur on his head seems to ruffle. Ghost gives an oddly happy ruffing sound and starts to bound away and as he leaps forward he shimmers suddenly and all that remains is a white mist that slowly swirls away.
((Well, if you haven’t figured it out by now, this is my overly dramatic way of saying goodbye. I know I haven’t been on Earthen Ring in a really long time but I have been playing on a RP-PvP server. But the time really has come for me to leave the game and I have closed my account.
But I just could quite leave without saying a great heartfelt good-bye to all of you wonderful people who made my time playing WoW such a warm and wonderful experience. I truly believe that I would never have stayed with the game as long as I did if it weren’t for your friendship. And make no mistake, though we have never met face to face, I consider you each to be a friend.
Hopefully our paths will cross somewhere down the road and I know that I’ll continue to at least visit the forums from time to time. Perhaps we’ll even run into each other on other worlds and if I land somewhere with some kind of permanence I’ll send up a flare.
But until then, know that I wish each of you the very best in whatever you do and hope that each of you continue to seek joy, show courage and share compassion.
Salute!
